One Week

courtesy of public domain pictures

tis the season marked by sparkle and joy

but this year the decorations seem too bright

the carols grate

and God feels far away

it’s been one week

one week since the world stopped

mourned

and wept

and I need to write something

but please

please

don’t call my words pretty

because the world appears to be anything but

it feels ugly

evil

hopeless

and my heart aches so incredibly much

that it’s tempting to escape

to forget that there will be untouched gifts with perky red bows beneath their trees

to be blind to their bright faces and cheeky smiles and futures bursting with life

yes it’s agonizing to dwell

but I have nothing else to offer but tears

sorrow

and my prayers

prayers that are angry

desperate

grasping furiously for any shred of hope

it’s been one week
